His name was Mahatma Gandhi, considered as the father of independent India. I heard his words of wisdom from his own lips. His words were simple but spoken with the confidence of a man who proclaimed that his life was his message. One particularly became forever etched in my young mind. He said, "One must be the change one wishes to see in the world." What do we want to see in the world? We want to get rid of poverty and have material abundance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

I became interested in Alex Honnold after the 60 minutes story. I never forgot his name, and just got around to ordering this book for my Kindle during an extended medical leave due to surgery . I thoroughly enjoyed his descriptions of the many "rocks" he's climbed. Having never been a climber myself, I was afraid it would be too technical to hold my interest. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was fascinated by his explaining how and why he's chosen to do this with his life. I also enjoyed reading about his various climbing partners and their adventures. I wish I had heard of him before our family visited Yosemite in 2011, as I would have heeded the park stranger's invitation to spend some time in El Cap meadow with a pair of binoculars to watch the climbers.

Very well written and well balanced book, between narrative and Alex's own writing. Incredible stories that will live on forever. I love the lack of ego in this book. Not many people in this world seem to appreciate the world the way Alex does. Everything is just very honest.This is a must read for climbers and non-climbers. It is about being a good person and loving what you do. Although not everyone can have the luxury to live in a van and climb in world's most beautiful rocks, we can take part in paying Mother Nature some extra appreciation and finding a side kick of something we love aside from our jobs.Glad to have people like Alex in the world everyone to look to for inspiration. Good people are awesome.

In my youth I climbed the route Alex went up in 3 days of the hardest climbing I had ever climbed.I spent the whole book nervously reading, it’s been 25 years since I have been in the route but still remember those cruxes. The achievements Alex has made in his career are incredible. To the non-climbers the choices on routes Alex chooses to solo may seem crazy, to those of us who have climbed seriously know how insanely bold those decisions are. The only place I have ever experienced complete concentration with no outside influences was leading a pitch. I could relate to Alex’s descriptions and emotional battles. He is in a class of his own, I hope to never open a paper to find out we have lost this person.

I was surprised after reading Alone On The Wall to discover that David Roberts is a climber, because when I was reading this book, it really seemed like he didn't "get it". It didn't seem like Roberts really understood or was on board with what Honnold was and is doing--his lifestyle, his climbing, and yes, his free soloing. Maybe it was because he didn't insert his own opinion into things--a lot of Roberts' writing is just summarizing interviews with other people. But there's a ton of people out there who either don't climb or climb more conservatively who have opinions about Honnold, and if I wanted to hear that, I'd read any of the hundreds of articles about Honnold on the internet. This book was a chance to hear from Honnold and find out what he thinks, and instead Roberts' writing is about what everyone else thinks--I just don't care about that.For the parts of the book which were actually written by Honnold--a lot of what he wrote is just responding to what other people say, which yields some insights, but I'd much rather have read what Honnold wanted to say. The problem here maybe is that Honnold doesn't want to say anything--he'd rather be out climbing. Which is great--that's how he became the climber who inspires me. But it doesn't make for a great book.I'll also point out that this book was published two years ago as of this review, and was probably mostly written in the year before that. In that time, I've seen Honnold mature a lot--his interviews on TV and podcasts show a person who has had a lot of emotional and mental growth over the last few years. The Honnold who wrote passages in Alone On The Wall is not the Honnold we know today--the one who wrote this is a bit immature, a bit distracted. I get the feeling that Honnold was pressured to write this book a bit before he was really ready to be writing a book--it's a bit weird to write your story before it's over. I really hope this isn't the last book we see from Honnold, because I think if he were to write a book now or later in his life, it would be a lot better.Contrast this with The Push by Tommy Caldwell. There's a book written by an older climber who knew what he wanted to write. At the surface level, it turns out to be a book that's much less about climbing, but it's far more vulnerable and insightful, and gives readers a much better understanding of what motivated Caldwell to become one of the best climbers in the world.

Was absolutely captivated. Especially by the first 3 or 4 chapters which explain the Video shoots of Alex free-solo climbing and how he became a modern legend. Very interesting as he explains what he's thinking and his mental preparation for free soloing. Also how he approaches his climbs and general outlook on life and risk-taking. If you watch his videos on YouTube, you'll buy and read the book. What he can do on the face of sheer mountain faces is unbelievable and has to be seen to be believed.

No se corresponde en todo con el temario del libro de andalucía. Lo compré como refuerzo y lo tengo casi sin uso.

Las actividades que incluye son demasiado básicas y no se aprecia un gran progreso en un niño de 4º. Se debería incluir más temario.

About the Author
Marilyn D. McShane Professor of Criminal Justice, University of Houston Downtown Ph.D. (1985) Sam Houston State University Specialization: Institutional and community corrections, child abuse, criminal justice system management, and criminological theory. Dr. McShane has taught at the graduate and undergraduate level and has served on a number of national criminal justice professional organization boards. She often serves as a reviewer for the National Institute for Justice. At Cal State, San Bernardino (tenured professor) she received the faculty Professional Development Award in 1994 and she was Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice (tenured professor) at Northern Arizona University. At Prairie View A&M, she was the senior founding professor of the Juvenile Justice Doctoral Program. Her current appointment is at the University of Houston Downtown as an endowed professor and institute director. Dr. McShane Professor McShane has a consistent record of publication and grantsmanship (more than 50 books and articles, and directed several grants). Her editorial work includes a series of dissertations with LFB Scholarly Publishing and a scholarly monograph series with Greenwood / Praeger. She co-edited the award-winning "Encyclopedia of American Prisons "and is currently co-editing the" Encyclopedia of Juvenile Justice". Her most recent book is "Criminological Theory, "3rd Edition, coauthored with Frank P. Williams III.

FRANK P. WILLIAMS III is Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Houston, Downtown. About the Author
John Brueggemann is Professor of Sociology at Skidmore College in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. He received a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Earlham College (1987) and Masters (1990) and Doctoral (1994) degrees in sociology from Emory University. He has spent his career since then at Skidmore College as a teacher, scholar and administrator. During these 14 years he has taught and written about a range of topics including class, race, inequality, religion, morality, history, social theory and social change. His written work has appeared in academic journals such as Social Problems, Work and Occupations, Social Science History, The Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Critical Sociology, and Theology Today. I also coauthored Racial Competition and Class Solidarity, which was published by SUNY in 2006.

Yet it took decades for the Austrian émigré, who died in 1953, to convince the East Coast architecture establishment that his kind of modernism was worthy. While his sometime colleague Richard Neutra pursued the Corbusian ideal of the house as a "machine for living," Schindler designed organic forms--angled walls, variously sized windows, plans that shift off-axis--that respond to multiple aspects of the individual site. In 1921, while still employed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Schindler designed the tilt-up concrete Kings Road House for himself and his wife, Pauline. This landmark early project--fulfilling, in his words, "the basic requirements for a camper's shelter"--was designed to be shared with a contractor friend and his wife. The house became a haven for fellow bohemians, a scene entertainingly described in one chapter of this excellent and copiously illustrated study of Schindler's contribution to modernism and the architecture of Los Angeles. During the following years, the "rustic complexity" of the Lovell Beach House (1922-26) gave way to increasing international style influence, visible in the John J. Buck Residence (1934), with its flat roofs and sliding walls of glass. Schindler's late work explored increasingly personal forms of "space architecture," culminating in the delicate crow's nest design of the Ellen Janson Residence (1948-49). This book accompanies an exhibition that travels to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Only long after his death in 1953 have serious efforts gone into assessing his oeuvre. The books reviewed here are welcome additions to the now-burgeoning field of Schindler studies. The Architecture of R.M. Schindler offers five scholarly essays and a wealth of illustrations and photos. Curators Smith and Darling compiled the catalog to accompany a major retrospective put together by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and traveling to Washington, DC, and Vienna, Austria. The text examines the distinct phases of his creative evolution from 1912 until his death but breaks no new ground, except perhaps for disclosures found in recently released personal correspondence detailing the bohemian life Schindler and family led at his west Los Angeles home. It is this landmark 1921 house that is the subject of Schindler House, a happy collaboration between one-time resident Smith (Frank Lloyd Wright: Hollyhock House and Olive Hall) and photographer Mudford. As his own home, Schindler built one of the most startlingly original structures of the 20th century, provoking both fulsome praise and bewildered condemnation. I first saw this book while visiting the Schindler archive at the University of California Santa Barbara. As I am in the process of writing a book about the history of SILVER LAKE, I dearly wanted to have a copy for my research, but was hesitant because of the price. When I was able to purchase a "like new" copy from a reseller at a discounted price, I jumped at the opportunity. I was even more surprised when the seller, who happened to be a neighbor, delivered the book in person to my house the next day!

So far this is the best book I've read on this architect. Many great pictures of his work in this book.

Schindler in his day was much underappreicated, people just did not "get" his work, but as you look at his work through the prism of this wonderful book, you can see his influence on modern architecture is indescribable. You can see his influence especially in Richard Meier's work. It is a shame that he did not live to see his work so revered, but at least books like this one, with its insightful text and wonderful images, are out there for people to look through and marvel at his work.

This book is a wonderful retrospective of Schindler's work. Though its easy to slip into hyperbole, this book is a must for the student of one of the last centuries most interesting architects. Schindler's work was overlooked in his day, some say due to not being chosen by Philip Johnson to be included in a very high-profile architectural show. Johnson himself has admitted his error! The book has several different articles on various aspects of Schindler's world, one focusing on his relationship with his wife, as well as presenting drawings, plans, photos of work-sites and social snapshots that are so important given the social nature of Schindler's work. A place to start or a place to refresh your studies. When they put this book together, they hit the nail on the head.
